A magician's true superpower isn't making a coin disappear and then pulling it out of a random spectator's pocket. Sawing a person in half? No, although that's always a fascinating spectacle. Nor is making the Statue of Liberty vanish into thin air, as absurd as that may seem. His true talent lies in deciding where we'll look in the next moments of his performance. Those crucial moments where the "magic" happens.

Every trick, no matter how sophisticated, is based on a surprisingly simple principle: directing attention. While we observe one hand, the other works undisturbed. Are we carefully following a movement? Too bad the decisive one happens elsewhere. These are always tricks, but they never happen where we're looking.

Sometimes it can make us feel stupid, but the magician isn't fighting against our intelligence. He doesn't try to fool our reasoning abilities, because that would be too difficult. He exploits a cognitive vulnerability shared by all human beings: our attention span is limited. And when we say "everyone," we mean everyone, even the most brilliant theoretical physicist on the planet.

Yet it is not talked about enough

We can direct attention. We can train it. We can protect it. But we can't make it infinite. That's no big deal if it's just for fun with magic tricks. But it's a lot less fun if we think about it. This resource is the same one we use to learn, listen, understand, decide, create, collaborate, innovate, lead and even know ourselves.. Virtually everything we consider cognitively important passes through there.

We talk about attention; in fact, we complain about it when it's lacking. Sometimes we're criticized (or we criticize ourselves, in retrospect) for being distracted. If we lose it while doing something, we risk having to start all over again. You know when you read the same page three times? Or when you find yourself in a bind because you can't remember a word of what the boss said during that exhausting, never-ending meeting?

Well, we know very well what attention is and what happens when we don't pay it. But we almost never focus on its most important function. Attention is probably the cognitive bottleneck through which all other mental faculties must pass.

When the problem changes shape

For much of human history, the problem was access to information. Knowledge was dispersed, books expensive, libraries rare. Therefore, skills—the hard ones—were concentrated in the hands of a few. Learning something often required years of research, physical travel, meeting teachers, and finding texts. Scarcity affected knowledge.

Today, we live in a nearly opposite situation. Almost all of us have access to an immeasurable amount of articles, videos, podcasts, newsletters, reports, scientific papers, and educational content. Ten lifetimes wouldn't be enough to absorb half of it. By the time you read this article, more information will likely have been uploaded online than the average Leibniz (17th-century mathematician, philosopher, jurist, historian, diplomat, and linguist) would have encountered in his entire lifetime. And he was the kind of person who today likely would have 47 tabs open in his browser, four doctorates underway, and a "newsletter" folder in his email client with 18,000 unread messages.

At first glance, it might seem like a victory. And in many ways, it is. But every victory shifts the battlefield. In fact, when a resource ceases to be scarce, the limiting factor moves elsewhere.. In a society saturated with information, in fact, the problem becomes attention.

More than quantitative, it's a structural issue, because between information and understanding lies a very complex intermediate stage that, paradoxically, often eludes us: information must be selected, then processed, then integrated, then connected to other knowledge, then transformed into meaning. All of this requires attention. A lot of attention.

Unfortunately, knowing something exists doesn't mean you've understood it. Having read it doesn't mean you've assimilated it. Being exposed to content doesn't automatically give you value.

The bouncer of the mind

To simplify a concept, it's almost never a good idea to use computer analogies. Almost never, except in cases like this. Imagine you've bought the most powerful computer from your local hardware store. Inside is a jewel of a processor, a hard drive the size of a two-bedroom apartment, and a graphics card that would make even the most hardcore YouTube gamer drool. Yet, if you simultaneously open fifty applications and seventy tabs in four different browsers while playing Microsoft Flight Simulator at max settings and downloading all your favorite music in lossless quality for offline listening, at a certain point, even it starts to stutter like a 1992 486.

Each system has limited resources that must be allocated. This is as true for computers as it is for the human brain. Cognitive neuroscience describes attention as a selection mechanism. Every moment, we are bombarded by an enormous amount of visual, auditory, emotional, and cognitive stimuli. If the brain tried to process them all simultaneously, it would collapse from overload. To avoid misfiring, it selects, filters, and prioritizes. Imagine having a bouncer standing at the front door of your skull, deciding what should come in and what shouldn't, what has priority and what can wait, when there's room and when everything is full.

The bouncer must constantly make choices. Every activity demands to be put in front of the line. Every interruption demands a fast lane. Every notification claims to be urgent. And the brain, willingly or not, must decide. The consequence is that Many of the skills we consider separate may actually share the same access point.

Let's take learning. To learn something, you have to pay attention to it. Then take critical thinking. To analyze a problem, you have to maintain your attention long enough to observe its nuances. What about empathy? To truly understand someone, you have to pay attention to their words, their tone of voice, their silences, their contradictions. Yes, but creativity... Even the most brilliant insights rarely arise from a completely distracted mind. Much more often, they emerge after long periods of immersion in a problem.

This is why attention is less like a skill and more like a system resource.

The economy of distraction

Now let's ask ourselves a naive question, just to give ourselves an obvious and at the same time surprising answer, because it's potentially infinite: who wants attention? Simple, everyone. Social media platforms, apps, streaming services, news sites, newsletters, chats (groups!), emails, ads... We'll stop while you can still pay attention. And by the way, somewhere on the list, include the colleague who texts "Do you have a minute?" at 8:33 in the morning.

Everything and everyone competes for a share of the same resource. We live in an economic system that places value on what manages to capture interest.. In this sense, attention has become a currency. Is it a stretch to call it the most important currency of the 21st century? Perhaps not. So much so that many phenomena we observe daily take on meaning when viewed through this lens. Infinite scrolling, autoplay, notifications, clickbait titles, increasingly shorter content, and many other things we all know well.

Without fueling controversy, we're all more or less aware that we're at the center of a fierce competition fueled by stimuli arriving simultaneously, from every direction, and increasingly stronger. The consequence, which we're often unaware of, however, is that the time and mental space we can devote to a single task tends to dwindle. Attention is continually diverted, interrupted, and reallocated. And every reallocation comes at a cost..

Let's be clear: it's not that we're becoming progressively incapable of concentrating. But our brains are trying to manage an attentional pressure unprecedented in human history. This is the "bottleneck" in the title: everything we understand, remember, learn, imagine, or decide in the coming years will still have to pass through that same bottleneck. Information can grow infinitely. Attention cannot.

The art of interrupting

At this point, it's worth addressing one of the most enduring myths of the contemporary professional world: multitasking. For years, it was considered a quality. In job interviews, it was almost a badge of honor. It was often implicit in job descriptions. In some organizational contexts, it even seemed like a test of efficiency. Those who could answer emails during a meeting, participate in a call while compiling a report, and keep three chat conversations open simultaneously were perceived as some kind of productivity tightrope walker. It's a shame the brain never shared this enthusiasm.

Neuroscience research is pretty clear on this point: in most complex cognitive activities, multitasking does not exist. Or rather, it exists only as a subjective perception. What actually happens is something different: a continuous shift from one task to another. Scholars call it task switching.

The brain temporarily stops focusing on one thing to focus on another, and then, perhaps a few seconds later, it switches back. Each leap requires a small mental reconfiguration. It's necessary to refocus, remember where you've arrived, realign your goals, and get back on track.

Taken individually, this cost is almost invisible. But when the jumps become dozens or hundreds throughout the day, the bill starts to become steep. Try reading the newspaper, changing articles every ten lines. By the end, you'll have skimmed through it all, but you'll hardly have a clear picture of the situation.

This issue is much more relevant to the HR world than it might seem. This is because many of the activities we consider high value-added (learning, analysis, coaching, leadership, problem-solving, decision-making) require continuous attention. Not necessarily hours of monastic isolation, but at least the ability to stay long enough with a problem to truly understand it.

When fragmentation becomes the norm, not only does work become worse, but we also risk confusing movement with progress. But it doesn't take long to understand that being busy doesn't necessarily mean being effective.

When attention wans, what breaks?

A potential mistake is to imagine attention as an isolated faculty, a sort of switch that turns on or off without affecting the rest of the system. In reality, when attention is depleted, an entire ecosystem is undermined. Let's pick up where we started a few paragraphs ago.

Think about listening. In your opinion, does truly listening to someone simply mean waiting your turn to speak? It obviously means following a line of reasoning, picking up nuances, recording inconsistencies, interpreting verbal and nonverbal cues. These are all activities that require sustained attention. If this is constantly interrupted, even listening loses depth.

The same goes for learning. A person can take a course, read a book, or attend a webinar. But without sufficient attention, much of the information fails to reach the threshold of deep understanding. It remains exposure, not knowledge.

Even critical thinking depends on attention more than we're led to believe. To question an idea, you have to stay with it long enough to observe its limitations, implications, and contradictions. This is difficult when your mind is constantly being pulled elsewhere.

And then there's creativity. We often imagine it as a sudden, almost magical spark. In reality, many insights emerge after long periods of immersion. The creative mind doesn't wander randomly: it explores, connects, reworks. But to do so, it requires time and attention.

For those working in human resources, this aspect is particularly interesting. Because many skills we observe in organizational contexts could be influenced, at least in part, by the quality of attention available. Sometimes we interpret a difficulty as a lack of critical thinking, learning, or problem-solving. And perhaps the problem lies deeper, in the resource that fuels all these capabilities.

This isn't to say that attention explains everything. But it probably explains more than we're used to recognizing.

The paradox of artificial intelligence

Here we are at one of the most discussed topics of recent years. We bet you expected it. It was inevitable. Many people describe it as a new source of distraction. Others see it as a cognitive shortcut. Some even consider it a threat to their ability to think independently. Be that as it may, perhaps the interesting point is that for the first time in history we have tools capable of lightening part of the daily cognitive load. They summarize documents, organize information, transcribe meetings, produce summaries, and identify patterns in data. In theory, they should free up our attention.

But here a paradox emerges. If attention is truly the scarcest resource, what do we do with the attention we can regain thanks to AI? Do we invest it in high-cognitive value activities? Do we use it to delve deeper, understand, plan, create, and learn? Or do we immediately redeploy it elsewhere, filling every available space with new stimuli? This question also concerns the future of work.

It used to be thought that competitive advantage lay in having more information. Today, almost everyone has access to the same information. Tomorrow, almost everyone will likely have access to the same artificial intelligence tools. At that point, the gap could shift once again. This time, it could shift to the ability to use those tools well. And using them well requires attention. If you think about it, it's already happening.

From this perspective, AI doesn't eliminate the problem. It just makes it even more evident.

A new luxury?

The ability to pay attention may soon emerge as a new form of privilege. True attention, we repeat, means staying long enough on a problem to understand it, or on a project to imagine its consequences, or on a question to transform it into knowledge. It may seem like a small thing, but it's enormous.

Because any investment companies make in skills, training, development, and innovation loses its impact and struggles to generate value if people's attention is lacking. It's natural, then, that the issue is becoming increasingly central. It's not nostalgia for a slower, less saturated past. We're all starting to realize that Some of the most valuable skills in contemporary work depend on a resource we can no longer take for granted..

Where are we looking?

Now let's see if you've read it correctly. Remember what the magician's talent is that we talked about at the beginning? The real lesson hidden in that trick of deciding where to direct the audience's gaze is that attention is a continuous choice. A choice that determines what we learn, what we understand, what we remember, and, in a certain sense, even what we become.

The reason is simple but not obvious: every time we pay attention to something, we inevitably take it away from something else. It's a form of investment, then. And every investment speaks to a priority, it says "this matters." Rather than lending, from now on, we should change the expression to investing attention. And failing to notice where we're directing it means exposing ourselves to the risk of others deciding for us.

The magician, after all, just wants to amaze us for a few minutes. We can even let him. But the contemporary world tries to decide where we'll look millions of times a day. And the most important question, in the end, isn't who will capture our attention, but whether we'll still be the ones to choose where to invest it.
