Newton and Productivity: Physics can simplify your work and improve your life

According to James Clear – former baseball player and, currently, Habit Formation and Behavior Change Consultant - Newton’s three Laws of motion can be used as an interesting analogy for increasing our productivity at work and improving our life.

The First Law of Motion states that “An object either remains at rest or continues to move at a constant velocity, unless acted upon by an external force”. Hence, objects at rest tend to stay at rest... so the most important thing is to kick off our activities, because once we get started, it is usually much easier to stay in motion.

That’s why Clear suggests the 2-Minute Rule: he recommends finding a way to start our task in less than 120 seconds. The rest should come more easily. According to some psychological studies (e.g. Ziegarnik Effect), in fact, the human mind finds it easier to continue an action already started and finish it, rather than face a task from scratch.

The Second Law of Motion, “The vector sum of the forces on an object is equal to the mass of that object multiplied by the acceleration vector of the object”, illustrates the fact that it does not take a monumental effort to achieve results. If you want to be productive, it’s not merely about how hard you work, it’s also about the perseverance and where that work is applied.

Finally, the Third Law of Motion states that “When one body exerts a force on a second body, the second body simultaneously exerts a force equal in magnitude and opposite in direction on the first body”. That’s why there are productive forces like results orientation, positivity and motivation. On the other hand there are also unproductive forces like stress, lack of sleep, and trying to juggle too many tasks at once. If we only add more productive force It’s all an effort to increase our productive force and overpower the unproductive forces we face. But, if we reduce the unproductive forces in our life, our productivity will glide forward naturally. Therefore, if we want to be more productive, we need to remove firstly the opposing forces.
